Portage La Prairie is about seventy-five kilometers (75 km) from Winnipeg and it is located in the province of Manitoba with equal distance from Saskatchewan and Ontario. In the early 1800’s the area was well known for the fur trade and then in the 1850s is when early European settlers came to grow crops. By the 1860s the area had over 60 homes and the is right around the beginning of what we know is Canada today. CP Rail was set up in the 1880s to help with freight, supplies, and grains. The city became a major transportation center due to its proximity to the river, and railways. A key was at the time this was one of only a few places in Canada where the two railways intersect.
